Do you know that barter is forbidden in Islam? (God’s proposed structure – part 6)

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 2201 & 2202 (If one desires to purchase (better quality) dates in replacement of (lower quality) dates. [i.e. a form of Riba which is called Riba-Fadl]):

Abu Said Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira (RAA) Narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) appointed a person as governor of Khaibar. This governor presented him with excellent quality dates (from Khaibar). The Prophet (PBUH) enquired, “In Khaibar, are all the dates of this quality?” He answered, “By Allah, no, O Allah’s Messenger! However we barter one Sa’ of these (quality of dates) in return for two Sa’ of our poor quality dates and two Sa’ of these in return for three Sa’ of ours.” Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) stated, “Do not do that [as this is a form of Riba] instead sell the mixed dates (of poor quality) for money, and then use this money to buy good quality dates.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 2201 & 2202]

So instead of bartering one should buy/sell (i.e. trade) the product/service in its respective market for money.  This ensures optimal setting of equilibrium prices and utilisation of resources.
